Customs Charges Fraud Q&A’s

Buying from outside the EU and not sure what to expect with the new customs charges? You're not alone. Here are answers to some common questions about customs charges and how to stay safe from scams.

Is this a bank charge?

No. This is a customs charge that may apply to certain goods imported from outside the EU. It is not a fee charged by PTSB.

Will every parcel from outside the EU have a customs charge?

No. Whether a charge applies depends on the type and value of the goods being imported, as well as customs rules.

I received a text asking me to pay a customs fee. Should I pay it?

Always verify any payment request directly with the retailer, customs authority or delivery company using their official website, app or contact details.

Can fraudsters pretend to be An Post or a delivery company?

Yes. Fraudsters often impersonate trusted organisations, including An Post and courier companies, to try to steal your money or personal information. If you're unsure, take a moment to stop and check before taking any action.
