The Government has announced a new Personal Investment Account (PIA), designed to make investing simpler and more accessible for people in Ireland.
The account will have a simplified tax structure, including a tax-free threshold of €50,000. If the average value of your account during the relevant tax period is €50,000 or less, no tax will apply. If the average value is more than €50,000, a flat tax rate of 1% will apply only to the amount above the threshold.
PTSB will offer the new Personal Investment Account from 01 July 2027.
Eligibility to open a Personal Investment Account (PIA) is defined by three primary criteria:
One Account Per Person: Individuals are restricted to holding one PIA account in their name.
Individual Accounts Only: Accounts must be held in a single name; joint accounts are not permitted under the scheme structure.
The Government confirmed two explicit key financial limits for the new Personal Investment Account (PIA) during the Budget 2027 announcement:
Annual Contribution Limit: €12,000 per year per individual. You can contribute up to this amount into the account each calendar year.
Tax-Free Account Threshold: €50,000. The account features a tax-free threshold on total account balances up to €50,000, with a low flat rate of tax (1%) applying only to account values that exceed this €50,000 value.
Information is correct as on 06 October and is subject to change. Please visit us again over coming weeks as more information on the product becomes available.
The new Personal Investment Account is not a capital guaranteed Government savings scheme. It provides a different tax treatment for eligible investments, but neither your investment nor any returns are guaranteed.
As with all investments, the value of your investment can rise or fall, and you may get back less than you invest. Holding investments within the account does not make them safer or reduce the risks associated with investing.
