Stormy weather

Stormy weather can pose risks to your home and car, particularly during periods of strong winds, heavy rain or thunderstorms. Preparing in advance can help reduce damage and keep you safe.

 

Important information

If Met Éireann issues a Status Red weather warning, your safety comes first. Stay indoors where possible and follow guidance issued by emergency services and other State agencies.

 

Strong winds

  • Secure garden furniture and loose items.
  • Lock gates and shed doors.
  • Check your roof for loose or damaged tiles.
  • Bring pets indoors.
  • Park cars away from trees and unsecured structures.
  • Close blinds or curtains to help protect against shattered glass.
  • Prepare for power cuts with torches, batteries and power banks.
  • Avoid using candles during power outages, as they increase fire risk.
  • Make sure everyone is safe before inspecting damage.
  • Watch out for hazards such as fallen power lines or unstable structures.
  • Take clear photos or videos of damage for your claim.
  • Only carry out temporary repairs if it is safe to do so.
  • Contact our Home Emergency Assistance service if you need urgent support.
  • Notify us as soon as possible to report your claim.

 

Tips for holiday homeowners

If your holiday home is unoccupied during winter months:

  • Secure all doors, windows and outbuildings.
  • Unplug non-essential electronics and check batteries.
  • Turn off the water supply.
  • Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbour.

 

Thunder and lightning

  • Unplug electrical appliances (except essential lighting).
  • Keep children and pets calm and away from windows.
  • Close blinds or curtains.
  • Prepare for power outages with battery-powered lighting.
  • Avoid windows and doors during the storm.

 

Hail storms

  • Close all windows and doors.
  • Park vehicles in a garage or covered area if possible.
  • Check roof tiles for existing damage.
  • Check your home and car for damage. If there is damage, take clear photos and videos.
  • Remove blockages from drains and gutters if it is safe to do so to prevent flooding.
