Flooding

Heavy rainfall can lead to flooding, which may cause significant damage to homes and vehicles. Preparing in advance can help reduce risks.

 

Important information

If Met Éireann issues a Status Red weather warning, your safety comes first. Stay indoors where possible and follow guidance issued by emergency services and other State agencies.

  • Clear gutters, drains and downpipes.
  • Check the attic for leaks.
  • Ensure windows and doors are watertight.
  • Use barriers such as sandbags if required.
  • Move valuables and pets upstairs if flooding is likely.
  • Be prepared to turn off utilities safely if water enters your home.
  • Avoid contact with floodwater where possible.
  • Check whether your water supply is safe before use.
  • Wear protective clothing and boots.
  • Avoid rooms with submerged electrical cables.
