Cold weather and snow

Winter weather can bring freezing temperatures, ice and snow. Taking a few preventative steps can help protect your home, car, pets and devices.

 

Important information

If Met Éireann issues a Status Red weather warning, your safety comes first. Stay indoors where possible and follow guidance issued by emergency services and other State agencies.

 

Tips for your home

When temperatures are low

 When it’s snowing
  • Keep heating on a constant setting to maintain at least 5°C throughout the property.
  • Open the attic trap door to help prevent frozen pipes.
  • Lag attic pipes where possible.
  • Check regularly for frozen or leaking pipes.

If you suspect a pipe is frozen, turn off the water at the stopcock and gently thaw it using a hairdryer or hot water bottle. If a leak occurs, turn off the electricity supply safely and contact our Home Emergency Assistance service. 

  • Seal gaps around windows and doors to reduce drafts.
  • Ensure your heating system is serviced and working efficiently.
  • Clear snow as soon as it is safe to do so.
  • Keep air vents clear.
  • Cordon off areas where snow could fall from roofs.
  • Check gutters and drains only if it is safe.

 

Tips for your car

  • Avoid driving in severe conditions where possible.
  • Keep your fuel tank topped up.
  • Clear snow from the roof before driving to maintain visibility.

 

Tips for your pets

  • Keep pets warm and provide a comfortable sleeping area.
  • Opt for shorter, more frequent walks in very cold weather.
  • Use coats for short-haired or elderly dogs.
  • Prevent pets from drinking from puddles.
  • Check under your car bonnet for animals seeking warmth.

 

Tips for your devices

  • Keep mobile phones close to your body to preserve battery life.
  • Store laptops in insulated bags.
  • Consider gloves compatible with touchscreens in cold conditions.
