  • They mass email or SMS a big mailing list - The Cast
  • Hope that the person receiving it uses the service provider they are imitating – The Hook
  • They wait for a response (click link, give details)– The Bite
  • They then start the social engineering – The Reel in
  • Full details disclosed and funds taken – Catch of the day

Phishing/Smishing/Vishing - Why me?

Why did I receive this Call/e-mail/text?

  • Criminals do not care if you are a customer or not. They will try to extract information from anyone!
  • How did they get my number and/or e-mail address – are my details compromised?

Criminals obtain data lists from various sources including :

  • Mailing Lists
  • Data dumps of online selling sites where people disclose contact details when selling goods
  • Active directories
  • Data breaches i.e. social Media or online shopping sites etc.

Why does it show up in the same thread as my genuine ptsb texts?

The modern day smart phone seeks to make the user experience more user friendly and looks to match message content with ones that are previously on your phone and place them into a thread “for the convenience of the user”.

Criminals may use software to manipulate this feature for their own ends.

Phishing/Smishing/Vishing  -   Is it a genuine Call/e-mail/text? How do I know?

Permanent tsb does not have a mobile banking site, but it does have a mobile banking app. You can only access permanenttsb on a mobile phone through the banking App. Any other access to banking on a your mobile device should be deemed suspicious

Phishing

Unsolicited emails advising of urgent security issues and requesting you to take action by clicking a link or calling a new number – Banks will never do this

  • Action – permanent tsb will never contact you by email for security purposes
  • Links – permanent tsb will only ever link to permanenttsb.ie for informational purposes and never for log in actions
  • Phone Number – permanent tsb will only ever request you to call the open24 number on our website or contact our fraud department on 01-6695851

Smishing

Unsolicited SMS messages from any source (even if they look like they are from the bank) requesting you to take action by clicking a link

  • Action – permanent tsb will never contact you by SMS and request that you click on a link
  • Phone Number – permanent tsb will only ever request you to call the open24 number or contact our fraud department on 01-6695851
  • The only action ever asked by the fraud department is to call our dedicated fraud line or we may ask you to confirm a transaction by responding with a yes or No (common practice for financial institutions)

Vishing:

Unsolicited calls advising of urgent security issues and requesting you to take action by handing over security details or codes:

  • Outbound calls from the bank to customers will never ask you to divulge security codes for any reason
  • Inbound calls to the bank have to be verified to ensure we are dealing with the genuine customer. Inbound calls should only be made to our dedicated phone lines
